Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, has begun demolition of a 62-year-old residence hall.

WSAZ-TV reports that Holderby Hall has housed many Marshall students since it opened in 1963.

Crews have begun the demolition process by removing trees, shrubs and assessing the ground floor.

The demolition will clear the way for construction of an apartment-style residence facility.

“Students today really want more of an apartment-style living,” Marshall University Communications Director Leah Payne said. “They just want different amenities that are not possible in this building. It was just going to be too expensive to retrofit it.”
