The University of Georgia plans to break ground next month on the Athens campus on a 125,000-square-foot freshman residence hall.
The Red&Black student newspaper reports that the planned $72 million building will be able to house 565 students. It is expected to be completed in July 2026, in time for the 2026-2027 school year.
The university's first-year class size has increased from less than 5,500 students in fall 2019 to more than 6,175 students in fall 2024, according to the university.
The building will be near Morris Hall, in a space that is now a parking lot. The building’s structure, room layouts and amenities will be similar to the design of Black-Diallo-Miller Hall.
The new residence hall is part of a construction plan that includes a new dining, learning and wellness center at the the intersection of University Court and East Cloverhurst Avenue.
