Large charter high school in Los Angeles plans to open campus for middle and elementary grades

Oct. 26, 2018
Granada Hills Charter High, with 4,700 students, wants to expand program to cover elementary to high school.

Granada Hills Charter High School in Los Angeles, already one of the largest charter schools in the United States, is planning to add elementary and middle school students at a separate campus

The Los Angeles Daily News reports that the expansion will enable Granada Hills Charter to give its students a continuous, high-quality education from elementary to high school.

The Los Angeles Unified School Board has approved the expansion, along with the renewal of the high school’s charter.

The Granada Hills Charter elementary school and middle school is expected to open in fall 2019 with transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, first and sixth grades. It will be situated on a campus of the former Pinecrest Schools, a private school that closed in 2016. Granada Hills Charter bought the property in 2013 and has been renting it to another school, Valor Academy Elementary School.

By 2023, Granada Hills Charter administrators expect to have 1,425 students at the new school. The high school has more than 4,700 students.

Enrollment has not yet started for the new school. But 500 people are scheduled to attend an information session next month, and another 500 weren’t able to get a spot for the session.
