Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville is carrying out a major upgrade of its lighting systems that will save the school $80,000 to $100,000 annually in energy savings.
The upgraded lighting uses about 40 percent less energy than the equipment it replaces while providing equivalent light levels. The lighting upgrades have been completed in 12 buildings, amounting to more than 4,500 light fixtures. In addition, dozens of occupancy sensors have been installed to turn on lights only when spaces are occupied.
A rebate from the local electric utility covers about half of the upgrade cost.
The lighting upgrade is part of an energy-saving initiative that has resulted in a 14 percent reduction in daily electricity use compared with last year.
