Small districts in Iowa need state approval for school construction

New law applies to systems with fewer than 250 students

School building projects in Iowa's smallest districts are now at the mercy of state officials for the first time under a new law that tries to protect taxpayers from wasteful spending. The law forces school districts with fewer than 250 students—35 districts qualify this year—to get the state's permission to build schools. The requirement for the state's permission also applies to school districts with fewer than 100 high school students.
