Los Angeles school board members have named Ramon C. Cortines superintendent. Cortines, 76, has been top deputy to ousted superintendent David Brewer. During his career, he has headed public school systems in New York City, San Francisco, San Jose and Pasadena. This is Cortines' second turn in Los Angeles, where he was interim superintendent in 2000. To read The Los Angeles Times article, click here.

EARLIER: The Los Angeles Board of Education will pay at least $517,500 to buy out Supt. David L. Brewer midway through his four-year contract to run the nation's second-largest school system. No successor has been named, but board members and other civic leaders have said they expect that the No. 2 administrator, Ramon C. Cortines, will be offered the job at least on an interim basis.

Under pressure by civic leaders and members of his own school board, Los Angeles Schools Supt. David L. Brewer says he will leave his post rather than drag the district through a racially divisive fight. The Los Angeles Unified School District school board is reportedly hashing out the details of an exit package for Brewer. A retired Navy vice admiral, Brewer was supposed to bring military know-how and a deep passion for education to the job of running the nation's second-largest school district. Senior Deputy Supt. Ramon C. Cortines is widely expected to take over as interim superintendent, a job he held in 2000.

Brewer and are quietly pressing for him to leave his $300,000-a-year position as head of the nation's second-largest school system. The school board is expected to discuss buying out Brewer's contract in a private meeting today, according to sources close to the district. To read The Los Angeles Times article, click here.

FROM NOVEMBER 2008: In an editorial, The Los Angeles Times argues that David Brewer should end his two-year tenure as superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
It says:

"In the interests of the students he is charged with educating, Brewer and the board should acknowledge that he isn't a good fit for the job of superintendent. They should chart a graceful course for his departure and embark on it sooner rather than later."
