Alcorn State University near Lorman, Miss., appears on track to break ground on new student housing by the fall and open new residence halls by August 2009. University officials say five private developers have submitted proposals, and several of the plans promised to have 500 of 1,500 to 1,600 rooms ready by next fall. Most of the school's housing units are at least 30 years old and in need in significant repairs for problems such as leaky pipes and broken elevators.
