A school board in California has voted not to enforce the state's Covid-19 vaccine mandates for its students and staff.

The Calaveras school board voted 5-0 not to follow the Covid-19 vaccine mandate that has been imposed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, reports Calaveras Enterprise

Newsom's mandate requires all students to be vaccinated if they wish to attend classes along with staff and teachers.

The Calaveras district consists of Calaveras High School, five elementary schools and one middle school.

Prior to the board's vote, Superintendent Mark Campbell told the board that based on liability and the risks associated with going against the state-issued mandate, he recommended that the district remain in compliance with the state’s rules. Campbell said that the district “stand(s) to lose students and staff on either end.”

It is unclear what the ramifications might be for school districts that defy the state’s vaccine mandate.
