Covid outbreak prompts Boston to temporarily close one of its schools

Nov. 9, 2021
The Curley K-8 school in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood will be closed for 10 days.

A Covid outbreak has prompted the Boston district to to shut down one of its schools for 10 days.

WBUR-Radio reports that the Curley K-8 School in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood has experienced a significant increase in students testing positive for the coronavirus.

“This is an active effort to immediately stop the spread and provide time to add staffing capacity to fully implement the test and stay and contact tracing programs,” wrote Principal Katie Grassa in a letter to the community.

The principal's letter says the district has not determined how students will continue their lessons while the school is closed.

Neither district officials nor the Boston Public Health Commission, which advised the school to close temporarily, has disclosed how many positive cases have been reported in the school community.

The most recent publicly available data on Covid cases in the Boston Public Schools community shows a sharp increase in cases in late October and early November. Between Oct. 28 and Nov. 3, the district tallied 109 positive cases, which is the highest number reported this academic year.
