From the 2025 Architectural Portfolio: Renovate Carson Hall, Construct Two Elevators

The project was recognized for its outstanding design in the Renovation/Modernization category.

Key Highlights

  • Installation of a three-story, double-sided elevator on the east and a two-story, double-sided elevator on the west has improved accessibility.
  • The renovation preserves the building’s historic character while modernizing its interior.

Built in 1951 as the student union and dining hall at SUNY Potsdam in Potsdam, New York, Carson Hall later was repurposed as an academic facility alongside Morey and MacVicar Halls. The buildings lacked accessible interior circulation because of mismatched second-floor elevations. The renovation adds a three-story, double-sided elevator on the east and a two-story, double-sided elevator on the west. The first floor was renovated with group and individual study areas, lounges, and informal “perching” pods. Selective demolition on the second floor improved access to classrooms and restrooms.
