Citation recipient from the 2025 Architectural Portfolio: Oakland University, South Foundation Hall Renovation and Addition

The jury awarded the project a Citation in the Renovation/Modernization category for its exemplary design.

Key Highlights

  • Enhanced lounge areas provide students with modern spaces for studying and social interaction.
  • The project preserves the historic character of South Foundation Hall while modernizing its infrastructure.

South Foundation Hall is one of the oldest buildings on Oakland University’s main campus in Rochester, Michigan, and hosts the core classrooms for incoming students. The existing 50,000-square-foot building, constructed in 1959, was renovated to upgrade or replace all mechanical and electrical systems, information technology and audiovisual systems. The 30,000-square-foot addition helps reinforce the campus quad while creating a new image at the front door of campus. Originally holding 37 classrooms, South Foundation Hall’s remodel adds 10 classrooms as well as an updated lounge area for students to study and interact.
