The form of Upper Perkiomen Middle School in Pennsburg, Pa., evolved as a direct response to the predominant site feature—the Green Lane Reservoir that borders the site. The design intent was to forge a relationship between the building and the reservoir; the three-dimensional organization of the building becomes an embodiment of the site. The public functions of the building are organized along the eastern edge of the site, and the academic functions splay along a northwest axis to provide expansive views of the reservoir and to capture maximum daylighting within classrooms.
