States with the highest percentage of federal school funds

Nationwide, 8 percent of public K-12 school system revenue comes from federal sources.

In 2016-17, the federal government provided 8% of the revenue that public elementary and secondary school districts in the United States received, according to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.

State sources account for 47.1% of school system revenue, and local sources account for 44.9%.

The percentage of federal funding that public schools received in fiscal 2017 ranged from 4.1% in New Jersey to 14.4% in New Mexico.
