The average salary paid to a public school teacher in 2014-15 was $57,420, the National Education Association estimates. Here are the states with the highest average salaries.

The National Education Association's most recent Rankings & Estimates, released in May 2016, found that the average public school teacher salary in the United States for 2014–15 was $57,420.

Among individual states and Washington, D.C., the average teacher salary varied greatly—New York teachers were paid 35 percent more than the national average; South Dakota teachers were paid only 71 percent of the national average.
