Among largest districts, who spent the most per pupil in 2016-17?

The average per-pupil expenditure nationwide in 2016-17 was $12,201, the Census Bureau says.

The New York City school system, the largest public school system in the nation, also spends the most per pupil of any large district, according to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Among the 100 largest public school districts, New York City spent the most per student in 2016-17—$25,199.

Almost all of the 10 large districts that spent the most per student in 2016-17 are situated on the East Coast—four of the 10 are in Maryland.

The amount spent per pupil for public elementary and secondary education (prekindergarten through 12th grade) for all 50 states and the District of Columbia increased by 3.7% in 2016-17, to $12,201 per pupil. Expenditures in 2015-16 were $11,763 per pupil, Census Bureau figures show.
