Shelby County (Tenn.) district has agreement with 3 suburbs over forming municipal school systems

Three suburban municipalities in Shelby County, Tenn., have reached agreements with the county school district that will enable those suburbs to form their own school systems. The Memphis Daily News says that leaders from Bartlett, Arlington and Lakeland have worked out deals in which the suburbs will pay the county district for retirement expenses and other costs that will remain with the county after the suburban districts separate. After the county school system merged earlier this year with the Memphis city school district, voters in six suburbs opted to leave the new unified district and form their own systems.
