Cleveland State University has launched a smartphone app that can identify the user’s location to police with the touch of a button. The Cleveland Plain Dealer says the Viking Shield app is integrated into the campus police computer system and works within campus boundaries. When an alert is signaled, the user’s phone automatically transmits its exact location to police. A dispatcher can forward that information to officers, who can respond immediately. If someone presses a button outside the campus boundary it defaults to 911.
