Nov. 14, 2013
Radiant-cooling system at Byrd Middle School in the Los Angeles district has been deemed a costly failure.

After experiencing an array of problems with a radiant-cooling air-conditioning system at 5-year-old Byrd Middle School in Sun Valley, Calif., the Los Angeles Unified School District is spending $17.2 million to replace Byrd’s air-conditioning system with a traditional unit. The Los Angeles Daily News says because the doors were opening every 50 minutes as students change classes, it was difficult to maintain the desired room temperature in classrooms.
