Massachusetts schools will stop sending letters to parents about their children's weight

Oct. 17, 2013
State officials say the letters were not effective in combating obesity and some schools didn't provide confidentiality.

Because of concerns about bullying and privacy, Massachusetts has decided that schools will no longer send letters to parents about the weight of their children. WCVB.com reports that the state's Public Health Council voted to eliminate the practice after citing evidence that informing parents of their child's weight status had no effect on pediatric obesity. The council also said that there had been reports of incidences in which confidentiality about the height and weight measurements was not safeguarded.
