Proposal to arm school employees sparks debate in Idaho district

A proposal to arm school employees in the Land Pend Oreille (Idaho) district has sparked a debate in the resort community. The Spokane Spokesman-Review says about 300 residents came to a school board this week for a public hearing on the issue. School Board Chairman Steve Youngdahl has proposed placing guns in secure locations inside district schools and training some teachers, administrators and other employees to use them in case of a school shooting. Superintendent Shawn Woodward says the overwhelming majority of teachers, parents and community members with whom he has spoken oppose arming school employees. He advised the board to drop the idea.
