L.A. district may try to redevelop long-closed campuses

Sept. 9, 2013
Four former elementary campuses in the Woodland Hills area could fill a demand for more charter school space.

Under pressure to provide classroom space for charter schools, the Los Angeles Unified District plans to seek proposals to redevelop and lease four long-closed campuses in the Woodland Hills area that could cost up to $80 million to restore. The Los Angeles Daily News says the elementary schools--Platt Ranch, Highlander, Collins and Oso--were among the two dozen Los Angeles Unified campuses closed in the early 1980s. In the intervening years, some sites have reopened or have been leased to private schools. But the district has provided little upkeep to vacant sites, and many have become eyesores.
