Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., says it doesn't want charter school to open

A charter school that wants to open in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., didn't do its homework and has been readying classrooms its students might never be allowed to use. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says Ivy Academies leased the former Eagle Charter Academy site in April. School officials started hiring teachers and enrolling students in advance of the school's planned August opening, but never checked with the city to see if a new school could open. Eagle Charter close abruptly last year, and the city is suing for back payments. The city says it doesn't want another school on the site and is in the process of rezoning the property for tax-producing business uses that don't include tax-exempt schools.
