No expulsion for Florida girl whose experiment caused minor explosion

Kiera Wilmot, the Polk County, Fla., high school student who was arrested after her planned science experiment with household chemicals caused a minor explosion at school, will not be expelled. The Orlando Sentinel reports that Kiera, 16, will be allowed to return to Bartow High School for the coming school year. She already has served a 10-day suspension and has been reassigned to an alternative school, where she is completing this school year. Her attorney say he is working to get Kiera's arrest record expunged. She was arrested last month after mixing toilet-bowl cleaner and aluminum foil in a small water bottle while outside on campus before the day's classes began. The mixture caused a firecracker-like pop, and some smoke emerged from the bottle. No one was injured, nor was there any damage to Bartow's campus. Kiera says she brought the materials to school as part of a proposed science project.
