$1.3 million federal grant will help recovery efforts in Newtown, Conn.

The U.S. Department of Education is awarding more than $1.3 million to the Newtown (Conn.) school district to help with recovery efforts following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 first-graders and six educators were killed in December 2012. The grant comes from the Department's Project School Emergency Response to Violence program. It will help pay for the actions taken by the district immediately following the shootings, as well as the district's comprehensive school-based behavioral and academic recovery program.
