State says Pontiac (Mich.) district may miss next week's payroll

The Pontiac (Mich.) school district is facing such dire financial circumstances it is not expected to make payroll next week, according to report by state education Superintendent Mike Flanagan. The Detroit News reports that the state has concluded that Pontiac has not made sufficient progress on eliminating its $37.7 million deficit. The report also says the district is unable to meet vendor obligations including transportation, utilities and custodial services as well as $1.5 million in technology bills owed to Oakland Schools. Meanwhile, the district's superintendent, Brian Dougherty, says he's resigning effective next week.
