Two elementary schools targeted for closing in St. James Parish, La.

Feb. 20, 2013
District projections show already low enrollments will continue to decline.

Two elementary schools in the St. James Parish (La.) school district have been selected to close over the next few years after a study projected dwindling enrollment and a shift in residential population from those areas. The Baton Rouge Advocate says that Fifth Ward Elementary School in St. James and Lutcher Elementary School in Lutcher had only 182 and 183 prekindergarten through sixth-grade students enrolled in 2012. Over the past two years, the St. James Parish district has closed Romeville Elementary and Vacherie Primary schools because of population declines.
