Enrollment decline will continue for Detroit public schools

The steady enrollment decline that the Detroit public schools have experienced for years is going to continue. That's what a revised deficit-elimination plan for the district is projecting. The Detroit Free Press says projections in the plan put the 2016 enrollment at 38,448 students, 12,896 fewer than this school year. The plan also states that the district would need 28 fewer schools. Roy Roberts, the state-appointed emergency financial manager for the Detroit district, has not determined which of the district's nearly 100 buildings would close. The district's enrollment fell this year to about 50,000 after 15 struggling schools were moved to a state-operated reform district.
