University of Illinois wants to create research lab in Chicago

Facility would seek support from city's corporate community

The University of Illinois is planning to open a privately funded research lab in Chicago. Crain's Chicago Business says the university's plan calls for a facility with an eventual budget of about $100 million a year that would be based in central Chicago and, organizers hope, draw support from other Midwestern institutions. The research lab's goal would be to unite top engineering and computing talent at the university's campus at Urbana-Champaign with Chicago's large and deep-pocketed corporate community.
