Chicago panel says none of the city's public high schools should be closed

From The Chicago Sun-Times: A panel studying which Chicago Public Schools should be closed is recommending that the system close none of its high schools. The Commission on School Utilization, appointed by district CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett, says in an interim report that closing high schools could jeopardize the safety of some students. Gang boundaries shift too quickly for the district to work around them, and students should not have to travel through neighborhoods that would pose dangers for them, the commission says. The school system's facilities are under capacity by more than 100,000 students, and administrators are expected to decide later this year on shuttering many of its campuses.
