Chicago officials are ready to announce plans to close about 50 elementary schools, sources say. The Chicago Tribune reports that an announcement on school closings is expected Thursday. The district, which says it needs to close under-enrolled schools to because of a $1 billion budget deficit. In addition to closing about 50 schools, sources said the district will consolidate or overhaul staff at a number of other schools
