Texas orders 6 struggling charter schools to shut down

State action is prompted by law that cracks down on charter school operators with chronic problems.

The Texas Education Agency says it will revoke the charters of six schools under a new law that cracks down on charter school operators with chronic problems. The Dallas Morning News says that the schools would be forced to close in June, but they may appeal the decision. The affected charter schools: Honors Academy in Dallas; American Youthworks in Austin; Azleway Charter School in Tyler; and Jamie’s House Charter School, Koinonia Community Learning Academy and Richard Milburn Academy, all in Houston. A law enacted this year requires the state to close charters after three straight years of poor academic or financial performance.
