Teacher exodus from Dallas schools increased after new superintendent took over

Dec. 6, 2013
From July 2012 to July 2013, more than 20% of teachers left the district.

More than 20 percent of Dallas Independent School District teachers left their jobs during Superintendent Mike Miles’ first year. The Dallas Morning News says that in the 12 months through July, 2,018 of the district’s almost 10,000 teachers retired or quit. The 20.5 percent departure rate increased from the previous year, when almost 18 percent of the district’s teachers left. The rate was about 13 percent in 2010-11. Soon after Miles arrived in July 2012, Dallas teachers, activists and education groups predicted that his policies would cause many teachers to quit because his planned reforms were too rigid and unequally applied across schools.
