Colorado agency says school must allow transgender student to use the girls' bathroom

Family of Coy Mathis filed a complaint with the state civil rights commission after the Fountain-Fort Carson district refused to let the student use the girls' washroom.

The Colorado Civil Rights Division has ruled in favor of Coy Mathis, a transgender 6-year-old boy who had been barred from using the girls' bathroom at Eagleside Elementary School in Fountain. The Denver Post says the ruling stems from a civil rights complaint the family filed in February against Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8. District officials told Coy's parents that the first-grader would not be able to continue to use the girls' restroom after the holiday break.
