President pushes for high-speed Internet in virtually all classrooms

The ConnectED Initiative would use E-rate funds to subsidize school technology upgrades

President Barack Obama has announced an education technology initiative that aims to bring high-speed Internet connections to 99 percent of U.S. students within five years. The ConnectED initiative calls for using the E-Rate program to subsidize the cost of providing classrooms high-speed Internet connections. "Committing to high-speed connectivity for all our students in five years will unleash the potential of the education technology market, where a lack of infrastructure has held back innovation," the White House Blog says. Fewer than 20 percent of educators in the United States say their school’s Internet connection meets their teaching needs, the White House says.
