8 to 12 buildings in line for solar panels at University of California, Merced

The University of California, Merced, is planning to add solar panels this year to as many as a dozen buildings on and off campus. The Merced Sun-Star says the university expects to pick a company later this month to install the photovoltaic systems on eight to 12 structures. About half of the buildings on campus could get the panels, including student housing, the Leo and Dottie Kolligian Library and office buildings. UC Merced already has a solar field south of campus that produces one megawatt daily. With the addition of rooftop panels, the university would generate about 30 percent of the electricity it uses in a year.
