States probe for-profit universities

Attorneys General across the nation are investigating abuses by for-profit universities that have left many students with staggering debt, yet few marketable skills and in some case no degrees, according to the Hechinger Report. At least 32 states are investigating for-profit institutions of higher learning, and 14 have filed subpoenas for information. California Attorney General Kamala Harris filed suit against Corinthian Colleges in October. New York reached a $10.25 million settlement with Career Education Corp. over allegations that the institution inflated its graduates’ job-placement rates.
