Sword-wielding intruder shot to death by police at Los Angeles high school

Nov. 14, 2019
Man armed with a 3-foot sword was fleeing police Wednesday and ran onto the campus of Esteban Torres High.

A man armed with a sword was fatally shot Wednesday by a deputy sheriff at Esteban Torres High School in Los Angeles, where he ran after officers tried to detain him at his family's home, officials said.

KTLA-TV reports that a family member notified police that a man was violating a restraining order and causing a disturbance at a home in East Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says.

Deputies arrived to find a man holding a 3-foot-long sword standing outside the family's home.

The man did not follow orders to drop the weapon and fled toward the high school, where he jumped a fence, police say. The campus is about half a mile away from the family's residence.

Officers pursued the man and ended up at Torres High School's outdoor lunch area, where he advanced toward them while still holding the sword.

One deputy opened fire and wounded the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released his identity.

It's unclear if there were any students or staffers in the area at the time. Investigators say they plan to interview students who may have witnessed the shooting. None of them were threatened in the attack, police say.

No student, school staffer or deputy was hurt in the incident, according to the Sheriff's Department.
