11th grader at George Washington Carver High was shot in the hip; injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A student walking to his high school in New Orleans Tuesday morning was shot and wounded.

Nola.com reports that the student, an 11th-grader at George Washington Carver High School, was shot in the hip and fled into the school for help. His injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening.

The shooter is not in custody, police say.

School officials were kept students inside the building while police investigated; they were dismissed for the day at 1 p.m.

Police said the student was walking to school on Metropolitan Street around 9:40 a.m. when someone started shooting at him. The boy was wounded in the hip and ran into the school.

School officials called emergency personnel, and the victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

No information was immediately available about a possible motive or a description of the shooter.

After the shooting, the school posted this statement on its website:

The safety of the entire Carver Ram community is our top priority. This morning, a student was shot near campus and came on campus for help. Then, shortly after, on Higgins in the vicinity of the school, shots were fired at our campus. We immediately called the police and ambulance. We put our school on lockdown. Within minutes, the police arrived. All students and faculty are safe on campus and have returned to class. Police are here investigating. We will continue to update you.
We have resumed the school day and we are currently working with police on our dismissal plan. Police have blocked off the area while they investigate, therefore, parents will not be able to enter to check students out at this time or busses be able to depart. All students are indoors and safe.
