An elementary school in Phoenix, Arizona, will be closed at least through winter break as the campus undergoes roof repairs and deals with air quality troubles.

The Ahwatukee Foothills News reports that the extended closing of Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary School comes after mounting complaints about odors detected during a roof replacement at the school.

Students are being temporarily relocated to two other schools in the Kyrene district.

"This means the Sierra community should be prepared to remain at Cerritos and Altadena through winter break,"  Kyrene District Superintendent Laura Toenjes said.

Work on replacing the roof won't resume until next week and "once construction continues, even at an expedited pace, we anticipate the project will still take several months to complete and will not be finished by fall break," Toenjes said.

The district announced on Aug. 2 that it was closing Sierra  until mid-October as a result of complaints about odors from the roofing replacement.

Air quality tests found high levels of volatile organic compounds at the school.
