The gymnasium at George Elementary School in Springdale, Ark., has been destroyed by an EF-2 tornado.
Structural engineers deemed the main school facility safe despite severe weather damage, reports The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
The tornado touched down in Springdale about 4 p.m. Wednesday.
George Elementary's main building sustained minor damage; the gym, a separate structure behind the schools, and outside playground equipment were destroyed.
The kitchen and cafeteria dining area in the school also were damaged. The cafeteria is clean and ready for staff and students. The kitchen may take additional time to restore, so for at least today, student meals will be prepared off site, then served in the dining area, according to the announcement.
The district is preparing space at George Junior High School, which is adjacent to the elementary school, if elementary students need to use the gym.
