East Brainerd Elementary School in Chattanooga, Tenn., sustained significant damage from a severe storm Sunday.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that Hamilton County Schools Facilities Director Justin Witt called it the worst damage to a school he's ever seen.
At least two people were killed in Hamilton County after storms struck the Chattanooga region, leaving a path of damage miles long from tornadoes and strong winds.
The storm appeared to travel a path through East Chattanooga, Ooltewah, Collegedale and Cleveland, with a large swath of devastation in the neighborhoods around East Brainerd Elementary.
Representatives from the Tennessee Risk Management Trust, the district's insurer, were evaluating the damage at East Brainerd Elementary on Monday morning, as families walked through neighborhoods to see the damage.
Several inches of standing water covered the school's gym, which had its roof ripped away by the storm. Pieces of the bus loop awning were twisted around nearby trees.
