Deadly tornado damages 3 schools in Nashville

March 3, 2020
The early morning storm has killed 21 people in Tennessee.

At least three schools in Nashville have sustained damage from a deadly tornado that struck Tennessee.

The Nashville Tennessean reports that Robert Churchwell Museum Magnet Elementary School sustained the most damage from the tornado, according to Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools spokesperson Sean Braisted.

Superintendent Adrienne Battle and representatives from the district's maintenance division were assessing the damage Tuesday.

The tornado that hit Nashville swept through Middle Tennessee early Tuesday and killed at least 21 people in four counties.

In Nashville, an exterior brick wall of Robert Churchwell magnet school was partially blown out by the tornado and windows were broken. Classes will have to be relocated until repairs can be made.

Braisted says the district is looking at relocation options, which will most likely be Park Avenue Enhanced Option Elementary School.

The district is also assessing the extent of damage at Meigs Academic Magnet School, and Lockeland Design Center Elementary School. Other schools are  experiencing power outages, Braisted says.

Classes were cancelled Tuesday because of the storm. District representatives are consulting with emergency management officials to determine when school will resume.
