A third-grade student in Sarasota, Fla., has been struck and killed while riding his bicycle to school.
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports that Roman Miller, 9, a student at Brentwood Elementary School, was fatally struck at about 7:48 a.m. Monday morning.
Roman trailed behind his sister as each of them crossed an intersection on their bicycles. Florida Highway Patrol trooper Kenn Watson says a Chevrolet Silverado was stopped at a stop sign. The driver, Charity Lamb, 25, says she saw the young girl go by, but not Roman, police say.
The truck struck the boy and dragged him about 15 feet, police say.
His sister, a fifth-grader at the school, made it across safely.
Watson says that the bicyclists had the right-of-way, and that there were no traffic cameras in the area.
After being transported by ambulance, Roman was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Lamb has a history of driving citations. Authorities say that since 2011, she’s been issued separate citations for careless driving, running a stop sign and a red light. She’s also been cited for driving over the speed limit and driving on a suspended license.
Classes are still taking place at Brentwood Elementary, but a crisis team along with grief counselors are at the school to help students and staff, a district spokesman says.
