Two people have been injured in an explosion that caused extensive damage to a high school in Carmel, Ind.
The Indianapolis Star reports the Wednesday evening explosion at Carmel High School came from a second-floor mechanical room. Fire officials believe a gas explosion occurred during scheduled maintenance on a boiler.
A Carmel High School maintenance employee and a contractor were injured in the explosion, Carmel Clay Schools spokeswoman Courtney Taylor said.
The workers were conscious when fire crews arrived and were taken to a local hospital. Their conditions were not disclosed.
About 100 people, including some students, were in the school at the time of the explosion, but fire officials say none of them were near the explosion. No students were injured.
The explosion and fire occurred when the school employee and the contractor were restarting a broiler, Taylor said.
All activities at the school have been canceled until further notice.
On its Facebook page, the Carmel Fire Department posted several photos of the damages caused by the explosion so that people could "understand the magnitude of the incident, and how fortunate we are this wasn't worse."
