A construction worker at Indiana University in Bloomington has died after he was struck by a large piece of limestone being installed above a doorway
The Bloomington Herald-Times reports that the incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at the Swain Hall West lecture hall, which is undergoing renovations.
The victim was identified as William M. Brown Jr., 35, of Bloomington. He worked for an independent contractor.
Brown was part of a construction crew working on the second floor of the hall. The workers had been using equipment to lift and place limestone above an interior doorway at the north side of the building when it fell.
Brown was hit in the head and chest by the limestone, which fire department officials estimated to be 6 feet long.
Finch Constructors and Pepper Construction have been working on the $36 million renovation, which includes building a new entryway, upgrading heating, cooling and other mechanical systems and cleaning and tuckpointing the exterior limestone walls.
