Fires in Los Angeles have forced many schools to close.

Hundreds of Southern California schools closed because of wildfires

Dec. 6, 2017
Many campuses are in a mandatory evacuation area.

Hundreds of schools in Southern California are closed Wednesday because of wildfires

CBS Los Angeles reports that more than 50 campuses operated by the Los Angeles Unified School District, more than 30 charter school campuses in the district, and all schools in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District have cancelled classes because of fires in the Sepulveda Pass, the Sylmar area and Ventura.

The Los Angeles district says the closed schools are within the mandatory evacuation area declared by the Los Angeles fire department. All students and staff should plan to remain home and avoid the smoke and ash that have permeated the air from fires.

In Ventura County, where the so-called Thomas Fire has burned 65,000 acres and continued to burn out of control, nearly all K-12 campuses will be closed.
