A 2014 carbon monoxide leak at the North Mac school district in Girard, Ill., prompted legislators to enact a bill mandating installation of CO alarms in state schools.
The Southern Illinoisan reports that state lawmakers approved the requirement after a carbon monoxide scare last year at a school in Girard, Ill.
The proposed law states that school districts in Illinois must put carbon monoxide alarms in each school building.
The impetus for the legislation was a carbon monoxide leak in September 2014 at North Mac Intermediate School in Girard. About 140 students and staff were treated at area hospitals.
