Stage collapse at Indiana high school causes minor injuries to more than a dozen students (with Video)

Students performing at Westfield High School fall into orchestra pit when stage gives way
April 24, 2015

More than a dozen students at an Indiana high school suffered minor injuries after a stage filled with students collapsed during a musical performance.

The Associated Press says many students had assembled on the stage for the grand finale of an "American Pie" concert at Westfield High School in Westfield, Ind. As they sang "Don't Stop Believin,'" the floor gave way and the students fell into the orchestra pit.

Authorities say all of the students injured in the collapse Thursday night were "doing really well," including one who initially was reported in critical condition.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the floor of the stage to collapse. Mark Keen, superintendent of the Westfield Washington district, says it appears that the collapse occurred when a cover that is placed over the orchestra pit for some productions gave way.

The Indianapolis Star reported that Westfield High was holding classes Friday morning. Keen says opening the schools lets students comfort each other and provides them with access to counselors.
