Reynolds (Ore.) district halts in-person classes at middle school because of fighting, inappropriate behavior

Nov. 18, 2021
Reynolds Middle School will provide classes remotely while staff members develop safety protocols and social-emotional supports for students.

The Reynolds (Ore.) school district has halted in-person learning at Reynolds Middle School in Fairview for about three weeks to address fighting and inappropriate behavior among students.

The Oregonian reports the school has turned to online classes while staff members work to develop safety protocols and social-emotional supports for students.

Superintendent Danna Diaz said in an email to parents that the Covid-19 pandemic and the disruptions that have followed “have taken a toll on the well-being of our students and staff.”

“We are finding that some students are struggling with the socialization skills necessary for in-person learning, which is causing disruption in school for other students,” Diaz said.

District spokesperson Steve Padilla says that fights and other behavioral problems prompted the district to shut down in-person learning. In-person classes for all 928 Reynolds Middle School students are scheduled to resume on Dec. 10.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this temporary transition may cause,” Diaz said. “We are confident that we can put necessary supports and operational procedures in place to effectively provide a safe learning environment for all students and staff during this time.”
