Donald Thurman, 26, allegedly strangled Ruth George, 19, in a campus parking garage, police say.

A Chicago man has been charged with murder in the death of a University of Illinois-Chicago student in a campus parking garage.

WLS-TV reports that Donald Thurman, 26, faces charges of first-degree murder and sexual assault in the death of Ruth George, 19. Police say Thurman has confessed to the crime.

Thurman is on parole for armed robbery. He has no connection to the university and did not know George, police say.

George, a sophomore, was found strangled Saturday in the backseat of her family's car at a university parking garage.

Surveillance video shows Thurman at about 1:35 a.m. Saturday following George into the garage and then leaving a half hour later.

Thurman reportedly confessed after being arrested Sunday morning at a rapid transit station near the garage. Investigators had staked out that station after tracking his travel patterns with the help of nearby cameras.

On Monday night, dozens of people gathered at the place where George was killed, remembering the honors student who dreamed of becoming a health professional.

George was an honors student and a kinesiology major. She graduated from Naperville Central High School in Naperville, Ill.
